Charge Share Trial
Powering journeys together
Charge Share is a new trial from the Motability Scheme. It helps Scheme customers with electric vehicles (EVs) share home charging with each other.
If you do not have a home chargepoint, you can find and book shared chargepoints near you.
Charging at a shared home chargepoint could cost less than using many public chargers.
What could it mean for you?
If you don't have a home chargepoint
Save money
You could save over £400 a year compared to using a public charging station.
Charge closer to home
Find a chargepoint shared by another Scheme customer in your local area - a more convenient alternative to public charging.
Stay in control
Reserve your charge in advance. No uncertainty, no wasted journeys.
An example of what you could save
This example is based on charging at a home chargepoint for eight hours each week for one year.
What you save will depend on how often you charge, the rate set by your host and the public chargepoint you would otherwise use.
Example: charging for 8 hours a week
Public AC charging comparison of 55p/kWh is based on the average price paid by Motability Scheme customers for slow AC public charging via the Motability Go app.
Estimated saving per year shown after platform fee of £1.50 per session plus 2% service fee. No platform fee applies during the first six months of the trial. Actual savings will vary.
Frequently asked questions
Joining the trial
Am I eligible to take part?
The Charge Share Trial is currently open to Motability Scheme customers who have an electric vehicle (EV) provided through the Scheme.
We’re starting with a small group of customers and rolling the trial out in selected areas first.
If you register, we’ll be in touch if there are chargepoints available near you.
How long does the trial last?
Your trial period lasts for six months. During this time, you will not pay any platform fees to the app provider.
After six months, you can keep using the service. Platform fees will then apply.
Can I leave the trial at any time?
Yes. Once you join the trial, you can leave at any time.
Finding a charger
How do I find a charger near me?
Use the map in the trial app to find available chargepoints near you. You can also search for chargepoints in a specific area using the search bar.
Once you find a chargepoint that suits you, tap on it to see more details and request a booking.
Can I only book chargepoints owned by Motability Scheme customers?
Yes, at the moment. As a guest, your trial app only shows chargepoints hosted by Motability Scheme customers.
You cannot view or book chargepoints outside the Motability Scheme through the trial app.
In the future, we may make chargepoints outside the Motability Scheme available in the app. If we do, we’ll let you know first and you’ll be able to choose whether to use them.
What charging speed will the chargepoint be?
All home chargepoints in the trial charge at 7kW.
This is slower than most public chargers, but home charging works differently. You’ll usually leave your car for longer, rather than stopping for a quick top up.
As a guide, most electric vehicles gain around 25 to 30 miles of range for each hour of charging at 7kW.
When you book, make sure you allow enough time to get the charge you need.
Booking and charging
Can I book in advance?
Yes. You can book as many charging sessions in advance as you need, as long as the times do not overlap.
You cannot extend a booking once it has started, so make sure you book enough time from the beginning.
If you need more time than expected, you can make another booking after your first session ends.
Do I need to stay with my car while it charges?
No. Most guests leave their car while it charges and come back later.
Please collect your car as soon as your session ends, especially if the host needs their driveway back.
What will hosts be able to see about me?
Hosts will be able to see:
• Your name
• Your profile photo, if you’ve added one
• The times you’d like to book
Only other Motability Scheme customers can see that you’re a Scheme customer.
If you’d like the host to know about any accessibility requirements, you can include these when you send your booking request.
Costs and payment
How much will it cost to charge?
Hosts choose their own price per unit of electricity, measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). This is the same unit your energy supplier uses.
There is a maximum price of 50p per kWh, so you’ll always pay less than the average cost of most public chargers.
You’ll see the price before you confirm your booking. You can only book a session if your app wallet has enough money to cover the cost, so there are no surprise charges.
You only pay for the electricity you use. If you end your session early, you will not pay for the full time you booked.
Will I have to pay any fees to use the service?
You will not pay any platform fees during the first six months of using the service.
There is still a 0.5% withdrawal fee each time you transfer money from your app wallet to your bank account. This fee goes to the payment provider that processes the transfer.
After six months, fees will apply when you use another person’s chargepoint. You’ll pay:
• A £1.50 platform fee per charging session
• A 2% service fee on the total cost of the session
How do I pay?
You can top up your app wallet using a debit or credit card.
When your charging session ends, the payment comes out of your app wallet automatically.
You’ll always be able to see your app wallet balance before you book.
Cover and reassurance
What if something is damaged during my charge session?
If your vehicle, the host’s vehicle, or the host’s property is damaged during a booking, this would need to be claimed through your Motability Scheme insurance policy.
