Charge Share Trial
Powering journeys together
Charge Share is a new trial from the Motability Scheme. It helps Scheme customers with electric vehicles (EVs) share home charging with each other.
If you have a home chargepoint, you can share it with other Scheme customers in your area and earn money when they charge.
What could it mean for you?
If you have a home chargepoint
Help other Scheme drivers
Public charging can be expensive. When you share your chargepoint, you could help another driver on the Scheme save money on every charge.
Earn money
You could earn over £300 a year, just by sharing your chargepoint with other Scheme drivers when it suits you.
Stay in control
You set when your chargepoint is available and choose which bookings to accept. It works completely around you.
An example of what you could earn
This example is based on sharing your chargepoint for eight hours each week for one year.
What you earn will depend on how often your chargepoint is used, the price you pay for your energy and the rate you choose to charge your guest.
This example uses the standard Ofgem unit rate for the price of the energy you use. If your energy rate is lower, then your earnings per session could be higher.
Example: sharing for 8 hours a week
Estimated earnings per year shown after platform fee of 10%. No platform fee applies for the trial period of six months. Actual earnings will vary.
Frequently asked questions
Joining the trial
Am I eligible to take part?
The Charge Share Trial is open to selected Motability Scheme customers who have an electric vehicle and a home chargepoint.
To take part, you must:
- Be the homeowner of the property where the chargepoint is installed
- Have a private driveway where a car can be parked while it charges
- Have a myenergi chargepoint that was provided through the Scheme, or installed by a qualified and certified installer
- Be on a standard energy tariff, not a smart tariff where your energy supplier controls when your car charges
If your chargepoint wasn't provided through the Scheme, you’ll need to have a copy of the Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC). This confirms the chargepoint was installed safely.
Cars must charge on your own driveway. We cannot include homes where a charging cable crosses a pavement or where the car is parked on the street while charging.
If you’d like to take part, register your interest and we’ll check whether you’re eligible.
How long does the trial last?
Your trial period lasts for six months. During this time, you will not pay any platform fees to our third-party partner.
After six months, you can continue using the service. Platform fees will then apply.
Can I leave the trial at any time?
Yes. Once you join the trial, you can leave at any time.
Does it matter what energy tariff I’m on?
Yes. Most energy tariffs work with the trial.
But you cannot take part if your energy supplier controls when your car charges as part of your tariff.
You can take part if you control when your car charges yourself.
If you’re not sure who controls your charging, contact your energy supplier.
How do I know if my energy tariff is eligible for the trial?
Your tariff is eligible if your energy supplier does not control when your car charges.
All standard or fixed rate energy tariffs are eligible.
Check your tariff name against the table below. This isn't a complete list - it includes some common tariffs used by EV drivers.
| Tariff | Eligible? |
| Octopus Energy – Octopus Go | ✓ |
| Octopus Energy – Intelligent Octopus Go | ✗ |
| E.ON Next – Next Drive | ✓ |
| E.ON Next – Next Drive Smart | ✗ |
| Scottish Power – EV Saver | ✓ |
| Scottish Power – EV Optimise | ✗ |
| EDF – GoElectric Overnight | ✓ |
| British Gas – EV Power | ✓ |
| Good Energy – Fixed EV Tariff | ✓ |
| OVO Energy – OVO Charge Anytime | ✗ |
Be careful: some tariff names are very similar.
The easiest way to check your tariff is to look in your online energy account or on a recent energy bill.
If your tariff is not listed, or you're unsure, contact your energy supplier and ask whether they control when your car charges. If they do, your tariff is not currently eligible for the trial.
Staying in control
Am I only sharing my chargepoint with Motability Scheme customers?
Yes. Your chargepoint will only be visible to other Motability Scheme customers using the trial app, including any named drivers on their lease.
Only Motability Scheme customers taking part in the trial will be able to view and book your chargepoint.
In the future, we may give you the option to make your chargepoint visible to other app users who are not part of the Motability Scheme trial. If we do, we’ll let you know first and you’ll be able to choose whether to make your chargepoint available.
Am I in control of when my chargepoint is used?
Yes. You decide when your chargepoint is available and which bookings to accept. It works around you and your routine.
Can I still use my chargepoint or vehicle app during the trial?
Yes, you can keep using your chargepoint or vehicle app throughout the trial.
You will just need to decide who is in charge of your charging schedule:
• Your chargepoint or vehicle app keeps control, and charges your car as it does now
• The trial app takes control, and charges your car at the times you set
Either way, you can still open your chargepoint or vehicle app anytime to check things like usage, status, or how it works with solar.
You and your guests
Do I have to be at home when my guest charges?
No. Guests can charge without you being there.
You decide when your chargepoint is available, so you can choose to only accept bookings when you’re at home if you prefer.
We do recommend being there for a guest’s first booking. It’s a good chance to make sure everything is working as expected and can help both of you feel more comfortable.
How do I know who is coming to use my chargepoint?
Before you accept a booking, you’ll be able to see the guest’s name, profile photo if they have one, their requested booking times, and whether they’re a Motability Scheme customer.
Once you accept a booking, you’ll also be able to contact them by phone or SMS.
What will guests be able to see about me?
Guests will be able to see:
• Your name
• Your profile photo, if you’ve added one
• The location of your chargepoint
• When your chargepoint is available
Only other Motability Scheme customers can see that you are a Scheme customer.
If you have any accessibility requirements you’d like people to know about, you can share these when you list your chargepoint in the app.
Getting paid
How will I be paid for the electricity my guest uses?
You choose how much to charge for electricity when you list your chargepoint. You can charge up to 50p per kWh.
We suggest setting a rate that covers your electricity costs and is fair for both you and the guest. But the final choice is yours.
When a guest charges their vehicle, the app measures exactly how much electricity they use and charges them automatically. You do not need to calculate anything or chase payments.
Your earnings go into your app wallet. You can transfer the money to your bank account whenever your balance reaches £5.
Will I have to pay any fees to use the service?
You will not pay any platform fees during the first six months of using the service.
There is still a 0.5% withdrawal fee each time you transfer money from your app wallet to your bank account. This fee goes to the payment provider that processes the transfer.
After six months, platform fees will apply if you choose to keep sharing your chargepoint with other users. The app provider will take a 10% fee from your earnings for each booking.
Do I need to pay tax on what I earn?
Money you receive from sharing your chargepoint may be taxable.
You may be able to use the tax-free trading allowance, which is currently up to £1,000 of qualifying gross income in each tax year. The allowance applies across your relevant trading and casual income and may not be available in every circumstance.
Your tax position will depend on your individual circumstances. You are responsible for keeping appropriate records and checking whether you need to notify HM Revenue & Customs or complete a tax return. Further information is available on GOV.UK , or you can contact HMRC or an independent tax adviser.
Will this impact my allowance?
Income from sharing your chargepoint will not affect the amount of Personal Independence Payment you receive, because PIP is not affected by income or savings.
It may, however, affect means-tested benefits or other financial support, depending on your individual circumstances. For example, earnings from employment or self-employment can be taken into account for Universal Credit and Pension Credit, and you may need to report the income to the relevant benefit authority.
Before taking part, you should check the rules for each benefit or type of support you receive. You can do this through your Universal Credit account, by contacting the relevant benefit office, by checking GOV.UK or by speaking to an independent benefits adviser.
Cover and reassurance
What if my guest does not move their car when I need my driveway back?
Most bookings end without any issues, but if a guest has not moved their car when the booking ends, you’ll be able to contact them through the app by phone or SMS.
What if my guest damages my charger or property?
Your charger is covered under your Scheme insurance policy as an accessory. Damage to the charger or cables caused by a non-Scheme car is not covered.
If a guest causes damage to your property or vehicle, this would be claimed against the guest's own insurance policy.
