Landlord permission

Why do I need permission?

If you rent your home you will need permission from the owner of the property to have a chargepoint installed. Installing a chargepoint without the right permission could lead to delays or even the removal of the chargepoint, at your expense. Our chargepoint provider, Ohme, will not go ahead without permission, which they check as part of their online survey.

How do I get permission?

A quick message, email or written note is all that is needed for you to get permission. If you don't know your landlord's contact details you can often get them from your tenancy agreement, rent book, or letting agent. It's also worth checking your tenancy agreement for any details about home changes or installations.

Types of permission

Who do I need to get permission from? The legal homeowner. This could be your landlord, council, or housing provider.

How should I get the permission? You should get written or verbal confirmation that they are happy to go ahead with the installation.

Why is permission needed? To comply with your tenancy agreement and avoid future disputes.

Who do I need to get permission from? The legal homeowner and your local council.

How should I get the permission? You should get written permission from both parties.

Why is permission needed? To comply with legal protection of the listed building and meet the terms of your tenancy agreement.

Who do I need to get permission from? The owner or manager of the communal space

How should I get the permission? You should get written confirmation what they agree to the installation.

Why is permission needed? To plan the installation carefully, avoid trip hazards, and reduce the risk of complaints.

*A shared space could include corridors, driveways, or shared walls. If cables need to cross these spaces, extra groundworks might be needed. This would come at an extra cost.

What happens after I've got permission?

Once you have got initial permission, our home charging partner, Ohme, will review your setup and confirm if any further steps are needed. Most installations are straightforward. But if extra permissions are needed, they'll guide you through what to do next. You can find out more about Ohme's permissions process at the link below.

Non-standard installation

What is a non-standard installation?

A standard chargepoint installation is suitable for most customers, but some installations might need some extra work. This is called a non-standard installation. This extra work isn’t part of a standard install, so it will come with an added cost. This usually ranges from £50 to £400, depending on what’s needed.

What work could be needed and how much extra will it cost?

We’ve broken down some common examples below to give you a sense of what additional work could cost. If you need any of this, Ohme, our home charging partner, will explain what’s needed and give you a clear quote before anything goes ahead.

£50 - £400

Longer cables or extra trunking

e.g. If your parking space is a long distance from your electricity supply
£50 - £500+

Electrical upgrades

e.g. if you need a new fuse board

£150 - £700+

Running the cable from your loft or underground

from £750

Groundworks

e.g. digging a trench for the cables or mounting your chargepoint on a post.

Is it worth it?

Many of our customers think so! Read more about the benefits of home charging at the bottom of this page.

Cable channel installation

CableGully

What is a cable channel?

Because you park on the street, you wouldn't usually be allowed to have a home chargepoint. But new cable channel products could allow you to charge your EV at home.

Cable channels are slim covers dug into the pavement that keep the charging cable tucked safely away while your car charges on the road outside your home.

You’ll need permission from your local council before one can be installed.

Frequently asked questions

Not every council allows cable channels. But your local council does! You can check your local council's application process by visiting their website. Once your council approves the cable channel, let us know. We’ll help you arrange your home charger application with Ohme.

Cable channels are priced separately from your home charger and installation. Typical costs range from £999 to £1,999, depending on your local authority and the type of installation. Some councils may offer support or discounts.

Cable channels are built into the pavement, so to use one you’ll need to bend or crouch down to insert the cable. This can be difficult if you have limited mobility. Before applying, make sure you, or someone who supports you, will be able to safely use the product. We’re working with manufacturers to improve the design and accessibility of these products.

What is the process?

The exact steps will vary a bit depending on your local authority, but they usually follow this path:

Step 1

Apply to your local council

Share your details so they can check if your home is suitable for a cable channel.

Step 2

Book a home chargepoint check with Ohme

Once the council says yes, Ohme will assess if a chargepoint can be fitted at home

Step 3

Approve costs and next steps

If any extra installation work is needed, Ohme will tell you before work begins.

Step 4

Final planning approval

Your council may need to approve the final plans. They’ll help guide you through it.

What customers say about home charging

Terry
Our main saving is fuel. Even more so as we are on our 2nd EV which has a vastly superior range to the first one so we rarely need to use public charging.

Yvette
Having an energy tariff that gives cheaper overnight electricity makes charging so cheap.
Alison
It has definitely saved money, but the convenience of home charging is a bigger benefit. No more petrol station stops!

Ray
Since switching to a fully electric car the savings has been astonishing. Most energy suppliers have som sort of cheap electric rate for people who have an EV.
