Because you rent your home, you will need to get the property owner's permission before you can have a home chargepoint installed.
Non-standard installation
We currently offer the Ohme home charger in two styles: tethered, with the cable already attached and ready to use, or untethered, if you'd rather connect your own cable. The charger delivers up to 7.4kW, so most cars charge fully overnight.
We can support you with the costs of a home charger. As it is likely that you will require a non-standard install, where additional work is required, you will need to pay extra.
What is a looped supply?
Your electricity supply might be shared with a neighbour — this is called a looped supply.
It doesn't stop you getting a home charger, but your local electricity network operator will need to separate the supply first, which can add a few weeks before your installation. This is usually a free process.
Your installer will check this during your survey and guide you through what happens next — there's nothing you need to do right now.
How do I get a home chargepoint?
Order your EV at your preferred dealer. They may ask you a few questions to confirm you are suitable for a home chargepoint.
We recommend you check that your landlord will allow you to have a home chargepoint, before ordering your EV.
Our chargepoint installation partner will ask you to complete an online home survey to provide some details and photos of your home. This is so they can check what work needs to be done.
Our installation partner will ask you to confirm you have received permission from your landlord.
After you've completed your online home survey, our installation partner will provide a quote for any non-standard installation costs.
Once you have provided the necessary information our installer will arrange a suitable date to install your chargepoint. Installation normally takes a few hours.
Landlord permission

Installing a charger without the right permission could lead to delays or even the removal of the chargepoint, at your expense. Our chargepoint provider, Ohme, will not go ahead without permission, which they check as part of their online survey.

Why is permission needed? To comply with legal protection of the listed building and meet the terms of your tenancy agreement.
Communal or shared space
Who do I need to get permission from? The owner or manager of the communal space
How should I get the permission? You should get written confirmation what they agree to the installation.
Why is permission needed? To plan the installation carefully, avoid trip hazards, and reduce the risk of complaints.
*A shared space could include corridors, driveways, or shared walls. If cables need to cross these spaces, extra groundworks might be needed. This would come at an extra cost.
How do I get permission?

What happens after I've got permission?
Our home charger installer will contact you once your application for an EV has been progressed. You should have confirmation that permission has been given by your landlord, and that a cable channel has been approved or installed when the installer contacts you.
Our installer will then review your setup and confirm if any further steps are needed. Most installations are straightforward. But if extra permissions are needed, they'll guide you through what to do next.

As this extra work isn’t part of a standard installation, it will come with an added cost. This usually ranges from £50 to £400, depending on what’s needed.
